Gun Site

Residential Development

Stockiemuir Road, near Strathblane

This rural site was a former Anti-aircraft battery built between 1950 and 1951 as part of the national defence plan known as ‘Igloo’. The Stockiemuir site comprises a battery of four gun emplacements spaced out evenly east to west in a crescent shape. Never used in anger, the four guns were removed and scrapped in 1956, with the heavy concrete gun bases left to fall in disuse and disrepair for the next 65 years.

Our client acquired the site and was successful in obtaining planning permission in 2021 for the conversion of the old gun bases into four luxury family homes. The existing heavy gun bases, with up to 1m thick concrete in some places, are to be left in place with alterations to some portions. To assist in the creation of an accurate drawing set, a point cloud laser survey of the old concrete bases was carried out for use in the technical drawing packages.

An additional storey is proposed above the concrete, to allow for creation of generous living and bedroom spaces along with views out to the hills. Views to the North capture Loch Lomond on clear days. The upper storey walls are to be constructed using an ICF system which offers high insulative value and a robust building shell in this exposed location.

Currently on site, this project is due to complete by summer 2025.
