Plastics Recycling Plant

Cardonald, Glasgow

This project is designed around a process to recycle waste plastic producing vehicle grade diesel, recovered carbon black for use in industry & gas for onsite power generation. Residual waste products are treated in a thermal oxide plant to produce almost zero H2O & CO2 emissions.

The mass & form of the proposed recycling facility reflects the characteristics of the nearby commercial propertiesin the Cardonald Business Park. The external cladding will comprise a facing brickwork plinth with insulated aluminium cladding panels & a low maintenance standing seam roof. The roof to the production hall will incorporate translucent panels over 20% of its area as the most efficient form of natural daylighting. Vertical glazing was eschewed for this area as the facility will operate 24 hours per day & we sought to minimise light pollution. The visual mass of the proposed building is reduced with use of a gradation of colour on the cladding panels from low to high level and through the introduction of feature fins extending out to the depth of the eaves, located at each structural bay, reflecting the structural frame layout within.

The proposals will make a positive contribution to the immediate area. The site is appropriate for the proposed use which will provide an exemplary facility of this type which will make a valuable contribution to the options available to improve recycling and reduce plastic waste going to land fill.
